Local Attractions & Activities
Walks
- We have a Labrador, Tana. We welcome pets as we find
owners who have pets are careful, and it is ideal for walks,
- whether along the coast, in the woods or beside the
rivers. You do have to keep your dog leashed in the nearby wood as it is
private and there are pheasants there.
Golf
- This is a marvellous area for golf. In Lossiemouth
there is a championship course. Just five minutes drive is Covesea, a fantastic course for children
to learn
to play on (12 holes par three) a pitch and put course and golf range
are adjacent. Near Kinloss there is a pay and play course which has
recently been extended to eighteen holes. Hopeman is just two miles away and has some demanding
holes and some of the most picturesque in the area, especially the Preisach. Elgin is a fine, wooded inland course and there are
many others not far away.
Whisky
- Moray is the centre of Speyside whisky industry. The
nearest distillery is Glen Moray which is on the western edge of Elgin, here
they offer tours and also have a nice coffee shop and visitor centre. You can
visit the famous Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glen Grant distilleries, or try Benromach
which is a small independently owned distillery in Forres.
The Whisky Trail is well worth a visit.
Fishing
- This is a fine area for fishing whether on the Spey or
at Millbuies. I love to go to the Rothes Glen lochs and even
- I sometimes return with a trout or two, often over two
pounds in weight.
v v v
- Moray is a county full of tradition and heritage. The
best festival is the Burning of the Clavie in Burghead on January
11th when a burning barrel of tar is taken through the
streets to bring back the sun and welcome the new year. There are the usual Highland Games in the Summer in most local
towns.
-
- Brodie, just outside Forres, is the finest
castle, but others are interesting like the nearby Duffus Castle. You
should not
- miss Elgin Cathedral and Spynie Palace.
-
- Elgin is a renowned centre for ancestral
research, there is a superb Family History Centre located at
East End School on Institution Road
- which is amongst the best in Britain.
-
- Moray is a world apart. It is friendly and
peaceful, except when the jets from RAF Lossiemouth fly over. It does mean
- that it is a prosperous county and many multiple retailers
are
either already in the area e.g. ASDA, Tesco and B&Q., but the best
are the local shops such as Gordon & MacPhail for whisky, Walkers, the bakers
and shortbread experts and a little shop called Made in Moray for
souvenirs
